The Stag beetles are a fascinating family of powerful, dynamic insects that exhibit some of the strongest sexual dimorphism of all beetles. Larger, more powerful mandibles are almost universally absent in the smaller, diminutive females. The males are very territorial and utilize their powerful mandibles constantly in defense of their breeding rights. Finding a male that is not battle scarred or punctured can be quite a challenge.
