SPINEY WALKING STICK (SO-9)

New Guinea

16x20 inches

Though most species of walkingstick resemble branches of some sort, few do the job of sticker-bush mimicry the Spiney Walkingstick does. It is almost unrivaled in sheer weirdness.

The larger and flightless females rely on their camouflage and powerful prickly kicks for defense as they feed at night on the leaves of bramble, rose, and tropical oak. Days are spent motionless
except to sway with passing breezes so as not to be conspicuous
in their stillness.

Body length can be well over 7 inches.
